Improving Lives Award 2010
Fri 03 2010
Oxfordshire County Council has been awarded the Improving Lives Award 2010 by Improvement and Efficiency South-East for the ODI Care Homes project.
Manor house has been involved in government research into personalised budgets in dementia care with Oxfordshire County Council and age concern. We were the only advanced dementia care establishment in the project which has resulted in this very prestigious award for the Oxfordshire team.
The awards are given to councils who have taken a significant step to changing and improving access to valuable services for local people and demonstrating effective innovation in efficiencies and improvement.
The Improving Lives Award was awarded to Oxfordshire for the development of Individual Service Funds in care homes. This is done by offering support brokerage to residents living in care homes. Many people have had new opportunities to socialise and participate in activities or old hobbies. Examples include breaking a lady's social isolation by taking up water colours, which she very much enjoys doing in the company of her neighbours.Or the gentleman whose advancing dementia results in challenging behaviour, who is happiest in surroundings which are familiar - in his case a sailing boat. The Individual Service Funds use existing money to improve individuals' lives by giving them greater choice and control over their care and support - in this case by exploring how they enjoy spending time. This in turn has contributed to a greater sense of well-being and dignity for people who live in care homes.
