Our staff gets nominated for Wales Care Awards
Thu 10 2010
The manager and clinical matron of a care home is in line for a prestigious award - after being nominated by a local GP.
Eileen Clews runs Ty Porth Care Home, in Porth, Rhondda. She's been shortlisted in the category for Excellence in Housekeeping and Hospitality in the Wales Care Awards.
The winners will be announced at a glittering ceremony at Cardiff City Hall on October 29.
Her category is sponsored by Cascade Laundry and the awards are organised by Care Forum Wales as a way of honouring the skill and dedication of people working in social care.
Eileen, 47, said: "I've been nursing for 29 years, earlier
specialising in paediatrics and midwifery, but have been in the
care sector for 16.
"In my early training I worked on some of the old geriatric wards
and found I enjoyed the experience. I like looking after older
people because I find it worthwhile and believe they are entitled
to good care.
I like to enable them to be as independent as possible and to have
an environment which is as much like home as we can make it.
To this end we encourage families to spend as much time as
possible with them."
There are 79 beds of varying categories and a staff of 110, including cleaners, administrators, maintenance workers, nurses and care assistants.
"I just love my work," confessed Eileen, "and love people and being with them. I still do a little nursing as well and find this very rewarding."
Winners in the Housekeeping and Hospitality section need to have
shown outstanding work in supporting the organisation to provide an
environment where individuals are able to live their lives to the
full in a comfortable and pleasant setting. One requirement is to
promote the uniqueness of each individual and "respecting their
ownership of their personal environment."
She was recommended by local GP Dr Sarjeet Rao. "She provides
immense clinical support for all my patients," he said. "She is an
excellent, hard-working and clinically effective care home manager,
highly regarded by her colleagues and clients. She always acts
above and beyond the call of duty, putting her clients first to
ensure excellent care."
Mario Kreft, Honorary Chief Executive of Care Forum Wales, said: "The Wales Care Awards is now firmly established as one of the highlights in the Welsh social care calendar."
The dedication, professionalism and quality of the workforce within the care sector is, I am pleased to say, increasing and improving year on year. It is occasions like the awards night that enables Care Forum Wales to recognize and celebrate such skills, talents and commitment.
Our aim is to recognise the unstinting and often remarkable
dedication of the unsung heroes and heroines working in the care
sector.
It is a pleasure to honour the contribution of all the finalists.
Each and every one of them should be very proud of their
achievement."
